L.A. County deputy accidentally shoots co-worker during camping trip

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy accidentally shot another deputy during an off-duty camping trip in Kern County, authorities said.

The shooting occurred Sunday morning in a remote area when one of the deputies accidentally discharged his off-duty weapon, wounding the other in the leg, the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. The wounded deputy was treated for the non-life-threatening injury at a hospital.

In the meantime, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office is looking into the shooting, along with the L.A. County sheriff’s internal affairs and homicide bureaus, which will handle the departmental investigation.

Baltimore City police are investigating a vicious attack in which a security guard was knocked out at the Horseshoe Casino.

The video shows several men attacking a security guard early Sunday morning. One of the men can be seen delivering the knockout blow.

The casino issued a statement saying most customers are responsible and only a small percentage cause issues.

"In the rare instance when this occurs, we follow a zero-tolerance policy," the statement read. "As a result, we have issued lifetime bans against the individuals involved in this unfortunate incident"

1 killed, 3 hurt when L.A. sheriff's deputies hit pedestrians while responding to call

Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and a man were injured Thursday night after the deputies hit a vehicle in West Hollywood while responding to a call, then struck two pedestrians, killing one.

The deputies were responding to a domestic violence call about 11:08 p.m. and had the lights and sirens on as they headed east in the 8800 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, sheriff’s Cmdr. Keith Swensson told reporters.

As the patrol cruiser approached Palm Avenue, it clipped a vehicle in the roadway, careened onto the sidewalk and struck two pedestrians who were walking in the area, Swensson said. The cruiser continued moving and struck a light pole and tree.

A security guard was killed while resisting robbery bid at a mineral water depot in Naubasta area of the Industrial City during the wee hours of Wednesday.

According to police, the robbers barged into the depot belonging to a 'paan-masala' baron and strangled guard Kamal Kumar Soni (42) to death when he tried to resist the robbery.

A police team found depot's cabin ransacked and cash worth several lakhs missing. Forensic experts and sniffer dogs were also brought to the spot to aid investigation.

Five rescued trying to save girl at Hueneme Pier in Ventura County

Five adults were rescued from the water at Hueneme Pier in Ventura County on Sunday afternoon while attempting to save an 11-year-old girl who was caught in a rip current, authorities said.

After the girl became caught in the current, her father attempted to save her but was soon overcome by the current as well, said Capt. Mike Lindberry, a Ventura County Fire Department spokesman.

Four other people then attempted to save the father and daughter, but they too became overwhelmed and all six were eventually pulled from the water by lifeguards and firefighters, Lindberry said.

L.A. police shoot a man to death after patrol car window shatters

Los Angeles police officers shot a man to death after the rear window of their police cruiser shattered while the officers were at a stoplight in Van Nuys, authorities said Sunday.

The two officers were in their patrol car at the intersection of Sepulveda and Victory boulevards about 11:30 p.m. Saturday when they "suddenly hear and saw their rear window shatter," said LAPD Officer Mike Lopez.

Both officers got out of their car and fired an unknown number of shots at a man, described as in his 30s, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Man convicted of murdering Santa Ana woman who witnessed gang shooting

A Garden Grove man was found guilty this week of murdering a woman whose body was dumped near the Newport Bay Bridge off Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach.

An Orange County Superior Court jury also convicted Irvin Tellez, 27, of the attempted murder of another woman on the same night two years ago.

Nancy Hammour, 28, was killed on Labor Day 2013 to keep her from talking after she witnessed the unprovoked gang-related shooting of the other woman, according to prosecutors.

Vallejo kidnapping suspect indicted by grand jury, faces life in prison

A Harvard-educated former attorney was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury in connection with a bizarre kidnapping in Vallejo that police initially deemed a hoax.

Matthew Muller, 38, was charged with one count of kidnapping. He is accused of holding Denise Huskins for two days and ransoming her for $15,000, U.S. Atty. Benjamin Wagner said in a statement.

If convicted, Muller faces up to life in prison and a $250,000 fine.
