Three New York City buildings collapse in gas blast, 19 people injured
A gas explosion rocked New York City's East Village on Thursday, critically injuring at least three people and causing three buildings to collapse, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Fire Department officials said.
A total of 19 people were injured, including four firefighters and one paramedic, said Ed Long, a Fire Department spokesman. None of those injuries was life-threatening, he said.
Speaking near the charred remains of two adjoining buildings on 2nd Avenue, De Blasio said that "preliminary evidence suggested a gas-related explosion."
"The initial impact appears to have been caused by plumbing and gas work that was occurring inside 121 2nd Ave.," De Blasio said.
Eleven buildings in the area of the explosion have been evacuated, Long said. It is unclear how many people have been displaced.
As of 10 p.m., firefighters were still putting out "hot spots," Long said.
Consolidated Edison President Craig Ivey told reporters at the scene that the company had workers at the building approximately one hour before the blast. They were conducting an inspection of a new gas meter that was being installed inside the building.
"The new installation did not pass our inspection at that time, meaning it wasn't ready for gas to be introduced," Ivey said.
The explosion comes one year after a gas-related blast leveled two buildings in East Harlem and left eight people dead. The March 2014 explosion occurred shortly after someone called the utility company to report a gas odor outside one of the buildings. The caller said the smell had also been present the night before.
Con Ed dispatched a team of investigators to the scene of the Harlem blast after the call was made, but it did not arrive in time.
In Thursday's explosion, De Blasio said a review of calls to Con Ed and 911 showed no one had called to complain of a gas odor in the East Village.
As of late afternoon, a New York Fire Department spokeswoman said that the building at 123 2nd Ave. had collapsed and that a fire was still burning at the building next door, which had been undergoing the plumbing and gas work. De Blasio said four buildings had been damaged in all.
Two of the people injured critically were taken to Bellevue Hospital, the Fire Department spokeswoman said. Among the other injured, five were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, said David Slotnick, a spokesman for the hospital.
De Blasio said at an evening news conference that there were three people in critical condition; the Fire Department put the number at four.
Firefighters initially received reports of a building collapse around 3 p.m., according to the Fire Department. Images on social media showed a large smoke cloud and flames billowing from inside the structure's frame and from the roof.
Smoke was creeping into buildings throughout the area and obscuring views of the skyline, said Andrew Scott Taylor, who works for a public relations firm at 8th Avenue and 37th Street.
"We had a window that was really just about a sliver open in our conference room, and before you knew it the smell of smoke was everywhere. It was very potent," he told the Los Angeles Times. Read more..

Pennsylvania police officer charged with homicide in suspect's death
A veteran Pennsylvania police officer was charged with criminal homicide Tuesday in the death of a suspect who was lying on the ground when she shot him last month, prosecutors said.
Hummelstown Police Officer Lisa Mearkle surrendered to authorities Tuesday and will face charges in the Feb. 2 death of David Kassick, 59, whom she was pursuing shortly before the fatal clash, according to her attorney, Brian Perry.
Perry said that Mearkle shot the man in self-defense and that she feared he was reaching for a weapon.
Kassick was carrying only a hypodermic needle when he was shot.
“She’s giving him repeated commands to show me your hands, and he keeps tucking them into his waistband under his stomach," Perry told the Los Angeles Times. "What is she supposed to do? Wait for him to roll over and shoot her?”
Calls to the Dauphin County district attorney's office, the Hummelstown Police Department and an attorney representing Kassick's family seeking comment were not returned.
Mearkle tried to pull Kassick over because his vehicle had expired emissions stickers, but he sped away, authorities said, according to a report in the Associated Press.

Security guard fraud exposed by undercover researchers
Thousands of licensed security guards could be working in the UK fraudulently after buying qualifications for cash, a BBC investigation has found.
Jobseekers must sit mandatory exams to get a Security Industry Authority card.
But undercover researchers found colleges happy to sit or forge exams for untrained students for a fee.
With a fraudulently obtained SIA licence, a researcher got a job offer at a power station and an interview to guard Canary Wharf.
Keith Vaz MP called it "a major scandal" and "one of the most shocking things I've seen in all the years I've chaired the Home Affairs Select Committee".
Industry insiders had told the BBC large numbers of colleges were willing to help students cheat security exams.
One former SIA employee, speaking anonymously, said a high number of colleges were breaking the rules.
He went on: "Thousands of people [are] working in the industry illegally, having obtained accreditation illegally."
The BBC sent an undercover reporter posing as a student to Ashley Commerce College, in Ilford, east London.
The college offered to "fast track" the researcher to becoming a qualified bodyguard - which the SIA says should take 140 hours of training. Read more..

LAPD officer accused of trying to smuggle Mexican citizen across border
A 10-year LAPD officer and a second person were charged by federal prosecutors Monday with trying to smuggle a Mexican citizen into the United States in the trunk of a car at the Otay Mesa border crossing.
Officer Carlos Curiel Quezada Jr., 34, and Angelica Godinez, 31, were stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers Saturday evening when they drove a white 2014 Nissan Juke through the border crossing.
The pair showed their passports and said they were headed to Mission Hills, according to the federal charging document. But when the car was inspected by a device that acts like an X-ray machine at a secondary inspection point, authorities noticed something unusual about the trunk.
When law enforcement popped the trunk, they found Antanasio Perez-Avalos, 26, hiding in the spare tire compartment, according to federal prosecutors.
Perez-Avalos “is a Mexican citizen with no legal ability to enter the United States,” U.S. Customs officials said.
Quezada and Godinez were charged with bringing in a person without presenting them to an appropriate immigration officer at a port of entry, according to the criminal complaint.
