Orange County sheriff's deputy stabbed by inmate

An Orange County sheriff's deputy was briefly hospitalized Monday after he was stabbed by an inmate, authorities said.

The deputy was picking up lunch trays about 1 p.m. in the disciplinary isolation wing of Central Men's Jail in Santa Ana when an inmate reached through the bars of his cell and sliced the deputy's left arm, Lt. Jeff Hallock said.

The deputy was taken to a hospital and received stitches for the wound, Hallock said.

The inmate had hidden the "contraband weapon" in his hand during the attack, said Tom Dominguez, president of the Assn. of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs, in a statement.

The deputy was released from the hospital and is "in good spirits," Dominguez said.
