Police chase ends with shooting near Facebook's headquarters

Three people allegedly involved in an armed home invasion Wednesday in the Bay Area led police on a chase that ended near Facebook's headquarters, where officers were shot at by the trio, authorities said.

About 5 p.m., police in Fremont responded to a home robbery in the 39800 block of Fremont Boulevard, where witnesses told police that the three people involved in the break-in fled in a vehicle, according to the Fremont Police Department.

A Fremont police detective saw the vehicle heading westbound on State Route 84 and -- with the help of a Newark police officer -- chased the trio to Menlo Park, officials said.

There, the three suspected robbers got out of the car near Willow Road and Hamilton Avenue, about a quarter-mile from Facebook's headquarters, and fled on foot, officials said.

At some point, one of the three fired at the Fremont and Newark police officers. No officers were injured, but gunfire struck a Newark Police Department patrol car, officials said.

Following a lengthy search of the area, two people were taken into custody. Their identities were not released.

With 10 p.m. curfew enforced, Baltimore sees a calmer night

With the National Guard on patrol and the city under curfew, officials struggled Tuesday to prevent a second night of rioting and appeared to succeed.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said at a late-night news conference that 10 people had been arrested: two for looting, one for disorderly conduct and seven for violating the 10 p.m. curfew. “The city is stable,” he said.

The night before, more than 200 people were arrested after unrest that followed the funeral of a young black man whose spine was nearly severed in police custody. The riots drew rebukes from the mayor, residents and President Obama.

As darkness blanketed the city Tuesday, helicopters thundered above crowds defying the curfew, and officials used loudspeakers to urge people to get off the streets. Some defiant protesters were met with pepper spray from riot police, who stood in long lines hoisting shields for protection.

Community leaders joined officers in appealing for stragglers to go home and prevent another round of looting, arson and rock-throwing.

"Please go home to your families. I’m not asking you, I’m begging you," Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), whose district includes much of Baltimore, told a crowd lingering outside a looted CVS pharmacy on the city’s west side, the center of Monday’s violence.

Darien Ford, 25, said that standing their ground was how demonstrators' voices could be heard. “It looks like this is the only way to get some attention here in Baltimore,” he said.

San Diego woman arrested on suspicion of trying to kill police officer

 A 31-year-old San Diego woman was arrested Sunday afternoon on suspicion of trying to kill a police officer who was attempting to arrest her.

The officer had responded to a complaint that the woman, who was believed to be drunk, was yelling at customers of a car wash along El Cajon Boulevard in the Normal Heights neighborhood. The officer went to arrest her on suspicion of being drunk in public, police said.

The woman, identified as Chelsea Saunders, "refused to be handcuffed and during the struggle grabbed for the officer's handgun," said San Diego Police Department Lt. Mike Hastings.

The gun went off, hitting the officer's pant leg, Hastings said. No one was injured.

Saunders was arrested and charged with the attempted murder of a police officer.

Nepal earthquake death toll tops 3,600

Terrifying aftershocks continued to roil Nepal on Sunday, sending people screaming into the driving rain and complicating efforts to rescue survivors after a massive earthquake killed more than 3,600 people in the impoverished mountain nation and surrounding countries.

In Katmandu, Nepal’s capital, just 50 miles from the epicenter of Saturday’s 7.8 quake, thousands were camped out in the streets, in parks and on sports fields, afraid that the aftershocks could bring buildings down on them. Rescue workers dug through piles of rubble, trying to reach survivors.

On Mt. Everest, helicopter teams evacuated dozens of climbers who were critically injured when an avalanche triggered by the quake swept through a base camp packed with people preparing to scale the world’s highest peak. But the flights had to be suspended when Sunday’s aftershocks sent more ice, snow and rocks tumbling down the mountain.

Dozens more climbers remained stranded at camps at higher elevations.

Local and international aid agencies were scrambling to get food, water, shelter, medical supplies and hygiene items to those in need. As planeloads of aid and personnel arrived from neighboring countries, some of the aircraft had to circle the airport in Katmandu while waiting for aftershocks to subside.

By Monday morning, authorities in Nepal were reporting that 3,218 people had died and thousands more were injured in that nation alone. It was unclear whether that figure included at least 17 people reported killed on Mt. Everest, three of them Americans.

Syrian American arrested in San Diego on terrorism charge

A 24-year-old Syrian American was arrested in San Diego on suspicion of lying to federal officials about his links to the Islamic State terrorist group in Syria.

Mohamad Saeed Kodaimati traveled to Turkey from San Diego in late 2012 and was in Turkey and Syria until he returned to the U.S. in March, according to prosecutors.

When he returned to the U.S., Saeed lied to agents from the FBI, Customs and Border Protection and the State Department when he said he had not been involved in fighting in Syria, did not know any Islamic State fighters and had never been involved in a sharia court, according to court documents.

But in conversations with associates and postings on Facebook, Saeed said he was affiliated with a sharia court that dispenses Islamic justice, that he believes in the cause of Islamic State, and that he fought in a four-month gun battle, according to court documents. Pictures show him holding weapons.

"I am currently the media person for the Shari'ah Authority," Saeed is alleged to have told an associate.

Saeed was arrested in the Rancho Bernardo neighborhood without incident Wednesday. He is charged with making false statements involving international terrorism. He is being held without bail at the downtown federal prison.

Born in Syria, Saeed came to the U.S. in 2001 and became a U.S. citizen in 2008. He has lived in Charlotte, N.C., and San Diego, according to court documents.

S.F. Supervisor Jane Kim wants Muni security guards to lose guns

The armed security guards who walk alongside the Muni workers collecting cash from buses, transit-sales desks and fare machines will be giving up their handguns if San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim has her way.

Kim wants to revise the Municipal Transportation Agency’s proposed six-year, $38.3 million contract with Cypress Security, eliminating the armed guards the transit agency has used for decades.

“Small businesses handle cash every day without security guards, so why does the MTA need them?” Kim asked when the contract came up for approval at last week’s Board of Supervisors meeting. “I’m troubled that we have armed guards at the MTA.”

The vote on the contract was put off so the supervisors could collect more information about how armed guards are used by Muni and other transit agencies.

Eliminating the armed guards would save the city about $1 million over the length of the contract, Kim said, as well as protect citizens from the consequences of a gunfight that could occur on a crowded public street.

“It would be better to give the cash to an armed robber so we don’t have a shooting,” Kim said. “I can’t support having more guns on the street than we have to.”

Transit officials argue that armed guards are necessary.

Unarmed guards “couldn’t defend themselves or those in their care from a person with a firearm,” transit officials said in a statement.

San Jose police chief tackles slaying suspect trying to escape jail

The chief of the San Jose Police Department tackled and detained a slaying suspect who broke out of his holding cell and scaled a fence in an attempt to escape.

Hector Flores Arias, 26, of San Jose was taken into custody Sunday in Mexico, where authorities said he'd been hiding since 2009 after allegedly gunning down a man. Federal agents escorted him to the U.S., and he was transferred to a San Jose holding cell.

On Monday morning, Chief Larry Esquivel was returning to headquarters when he saw Arias – still handcuffed – sprinting from the holding area toward an electric gate, police Sgt. Enrique Garcia said. Esquivel stepped from his car and ordered Arias to stop.

But Arias continued running, and Esquivel tackled him.

After they fell to the ground, Arias jumped to his feet and continued running. Esquivel, a former SWAT member, chased Arias and tackled him again, successfully detaining him.

Prior clashes may factor into San Bernardino County beating inquiries

Before he found himself being beaten earlier this month by San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies in view of a hovering news helicopter, Francis Pusok and law enforcement had clashed more than once.

2 held for allegedly firing on officers, civilians in Riverside County

For three days beginning Saturday, Riverside County sheriff’s deputies searched for a gunman who had fired on civilians and law enforcement officers with a high-powered rifle.

The hunt started Saturday, when a resident in San Jacinto flagged down an officer and told him someone had just driven by and pointed a gun at him, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The officer saw the truck and gave chase; officials say a colleague over the radio told him the car’s description matched a car involved in a recent carjacking. But as the pursuit unfolded, someone inside the vehicle began shooting at police, authorities said.

Sheriff’s Department officials say multiple rounds hit the squad car, at least one of which disabled it. As the car rolled to a stop, the gunman drove off, only to crash into a home two blocks away. By the time police arrived, the gunman was gone; a high-powered rifle with a laser sight was found nearby.

San Jacinto officers came under fire by the same shooter again on Sunday, police said.

Then on Monday, there was another shooting. About 10:30 p.m., a Hemet resident said someone in a red Dodge truck drove by and shot at them.

Just before midnight, a San Jacinto police officer spotted the truck headed toward the Soboba Indian Reservation.

Again, police gave chase. Like the two previous pursuits, a gunman armed with a high-powered rifle began shooting at officers out the rear of the truck. Though the shots didn’t disable the squad car, the gunmen briefly escaped when they drove the truck into a sandy ravine.

Skin guru acquitted of murder plot sues Los Angeles County sheriff's officials

A skin care guru to the stars acquitted of plotting to kill a rival has sued Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives alleging they conducted a shoddy investigation that led to her being jailed for more than 10 months before her trial.

A jury took only an hour in January to find Dawn DaLuise not guilty of solicitation of murder and solicitation of assault charges.

In a lawsuit filed last week, DaLuise alleged that investigators claimed they had a "solid case" but actually relied on a witness they later arrested on suspicion of stalking her.

Sheriff’s investigators arrested DaLuise last year, saying that text messages she sent showed she was serious about having her West Hollywood business rival, Smooth Cheeks owner Gabriel Suarez, killed. Authorities accused her of approaching a former NFL player to carry out the task.

But the suit alleges a search of her 6,000 messages by authorities yielded only two text messages related to Suarez and that one of those messages ended with the phrase LOL -- meaning "laugh out loud." The messages were not intended to be taken seriously, the suit said.

Los Angeles police accused of allowing search dog to attack woman's cat

When Alissa Kirby returned to her apartment in Mid-Wilshire area and found a trail of blood under her bed leading to her 2-year-old tabby, she panicked. She rushed the cat to the emergency veterinarian clinic across town and told the vet her theory: A dog had bitten Butters.

But not just any dog — a police dog; one of the eight that had swept through her building March 10, searching for a possibly armed burglary suspect. The next morning, a veterinarian confirmed that the puncture wounds on the right side of Butters' chest were three obvious teeth marks, farther apart than an average-size cat's teeth and consistent with a bite wound.

The Los Angeles Police Department has launched a formal investigation into Kirby's allegation that her cat was attacked by a dog from the K-9 unit, resulting in nearly $1,000 in veterinarian bills.

Although Kirby filed a complaint the week of the incident, she still hasn't been given an official explanation. She plans to file a claim for damages against the LAPD, but said her focus is on finding out who is responsible.

 The recent shooting of a homeless man — who was identified Thursday as Charly Leundeu Keunang, 43, after days of international mystery — has once again drawn focus to police use of force.

Los Angeles Police Department officers so far this year have fatally shot three people, two downtown. In addition to Keunang, 24-year-old Pablo Meza was shot and killed Jan. 17 near the intersection of Jesse and Mateo streets. Officers responded to a call of a man with a weapon. Police said he was waving a gun in the air and acting erratically.

Meza died blocks away from skid row, which is defined as the area bordered by East 3rd, Alameda, East 7th and South Main streets.

Armed with purse and bad wig, 'Mrs. Doubtfire' bandit robs Santa Cruz bank

Santa Cruz police are looking for a cross-dressing man who robbed one bank last week and staked out a second.

Dubbed “Mrs. Doubtfire” by local authorities, the man is seen in security camera video near the entrance of a Rabo Bank with a purse hanging awkwardly from his left arm, his face partially masked by long, curly, blond bangs swept across his face and glasses.

His hair is a wig and his attire a set of navy blue medical scrubs pulled over a light purple, long sleeve undershirt, police said. He’s described as a dark-skinned man between 25 and 35 years old, weighing between 160 and 170 pounds and about 5 feet, 5 inches tall.

“We believe these are great photos of the suspect and somebody in the community has to recognize this person,” Santa Cruz police said in a statement.

Authorities said that on Friday the “Mrs. Doubtfire” bandit stood inside the Rabo Bank about 2 p.m. until he was confronted by bank employees, then left.

Marlborough School, ex-teacher sued by former student alleging sex abuse

A lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Wednesday detailed new allegations of sexual misconduct by a former Marlborough School teacher, including a reported history of sexual abuse of students at other Los Angeles-area private schools that were apparently ignored when he was hired at the Hancock Park all-girls school.

The lawsuit, filed by an unnamed 30-year-old former Marlborough student, alleges that the teacher initiated a yearlong sexual relationship with her in 2000, when she was 16.

The lawsuit also said that Marlborough ignored past allegations of sexual misconduct by Joseph Thomas Koetters at Polytechnic High School in Pasadena and Viewpoint School in Calabasas.

Marlborough failed to investigate complaints against the teacher or to alert authorities to possible abuse and stood by as Koetters preyed on at least two other students over more than a decade on campus, according to the lawsuit.

School officials also apparently helped him secure another teaching job rather than fire him and failed to alert Polytechnic High of the allegations of sexual misconduct before Koetters was rehired there in 2013, the woman said in the lawsuit.

“Because the matter is the subject of a criminal investigation and now in litigation, it would be inappropriate to comment at this time,” Marlborough spokeswoman Carly Rodriguez said in a statement. Read more...

Ex-49er Kwame Harris allegedly tried to bite S.F. police officer

Former 49ers and Raiders offensive tackle Kwame Harris has been arrested in San Francisco after police say he was involved in two hit-and-run collisions, fell asleep while his car was still running and attempted to bite a police officer’s hand.

About 7:30 p.m. Sunday, police found Harris, 33, unconscious behind the wheel near 14th Street and South Van Ness Avenue, said San Francisco police Officer Carlos Manfredi. The vehicle’s engine was on and it was parked about halfway into a chained-off driveway.

Harris “appeared to be in an altered mental status” and “did not comply with officers’ demands,” Manfredi said. Medical professionals were called to the scene because Harris was suspected of being under the influence of drugs.

When police attempted to handcuff him, Harris tried to bite one of the officer’s hands, Manfredi said. Officers eventually subdued him and took him into custody.

Andrew Getty's death does not appear to involve foul play, authorities say

Authorities investigating the death of Andrew Getty, an heir to the Getty oil fortune, said a preliminary investigation suggests foul play was not involved.

The death appeared to be natural or an accident, said Ed Winter, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner's office. Investigators have not determined a time of death, Winter said.

A law enforcement source told The Times that Getty was found naked from the waist down in the bathroom of his Hollywood Hills estate Tuesday and appeared to have suffered from some type of blunt-force trauma. It's unclear whether the injury was caused by a fall or something else.

LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith, a department spokesman, cautioned that it was still “very, very early in the investigation” but said that based on initial observations, “this does not appear immediately to be a criminal act.”
