A small, homemade airplane crashed into a cellphone tower in Riverside County, leaving one person dead and a woman injured, authorities said.
Shortly after 12 p.m., the plane struck the tower -- which is designed to look like a tree -- near Lake Matthews in an unincorporated area of Corona, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
One person, whose identity was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman was ejected from the plane and hospitalized with moderate injuries, fire officials said.

Rapper Nipsey Hussle was arrested Wednesday in Burbank after officers found a bottle of codeine in his car during a traffic stop, police said.
Police stopped the 29-year-old rapper, born Ermias Asghedom, on suspicion of traffic violations at 11:20 p.m., at Ford Street and Magnolia Boulevard. Officers discovered he had an outstanding warrant for driving with a suspended license, Burbank police Lt. Adam Cornils said.
With his consent, officers searched his car. They found a bottle of codeine without a prescription label as well as a soft drink and a cup of ice -- ingredients used to make a highly potent drink, Cornils said.

Witnesses to the police shooting of an unarmed man in Los Feliz have told investigators they also believed the man had a gun when he walked "aggressively" toward officers, LAPD officials said Tuesday.
Walter William DeLeon was shot Friday evening on Los Feliz Boulevard after police allege he pointed his cloth-covered hands at officers, leading them to think he had a gun hidden under the gray cloth. They ordered him to drop the weapon, but he kept walking toward them, the LAPD said, prompting one officer to shoot.
DeLeon remained in critical condition on Tuesday evening.

Police shot and killed a man Sunday on a residential street in Azusa, authorities said.
The shooting occurred in the 500 block of East Lee Drive shortly before 1 p.m., said Deputy Amber Smith of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which is assisting Azusa police in the investigation.
The man was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, Smith said.
Officials did not disclose what led up to the shooting. No officers were injured, Smith said.

It's just the beginning of summer vacation and the Orange County Sheriff says juvenile crime is already on the rise. He's asking parents for their help.
"It has been a violent weekend in unincorporated Orange County," said Sheriff Jerry Demings.
Crime scene tape left over from last weekend after a 16-year-old boy was shot on Indian Hills Road by Meadowbrook Lane. Investigators say it was a drive-by shooting by someone the boy didn't know.
Orange County Sgt. Antonio Wright says, "It's my understand that he is doing well; he's expected to recover. We are soliciting tips about the community, if you know something about the shooting."

Dylann Storm Roof, 21, was identified June 18 as the suspected gunman who shot and killed nine people at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C. on June 17. Atty. Gen. Loretta Lynch and police confirmed a short time later that Roof was arrested in Shelby, N.C.

Rounds of ammunition exploded Wednesday as flames tore through a Yorba Linda home for more than hour, gutting the two-story residence and damaging nearby homes, authorities said.
About 1:40 p.m., the blaze erupted in the backyard of the home in the 17200 block of Chestnut Street, said Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority.
Before more than 90 firefighters arrived, a plume of thick black smoke rose up and the heat caused several rounds of homemade ammunition to burst. Loud pops could be heard through the affluent neighborhood, Concialdi said.

Rank-and-file Border Patrol agents are furious that they have lost some of their favorite enforcement tools and say that intense public criticism of border shootings has led to a morale crisis.

The agency that allowed hackers linked to China to steal private information about nearly every federal employee — and detailed personal histories of millions with security clearances — failed for years to take basic steps to secure its computer networks, officials acknowledged to Congress on Tuesday.
Democrats and Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee spoke in unison to describe their outrage over what they called gross negligence by the Office of Personnel Management. The agency's data was breached last year in two massive cyberattacks only recently revealed.
The criticism came from within, as well. Michael Esser, the agency's assistant inspector general for audit, detailed a yearslong failure by OPM to adhere to reasonable cybersecurity practices, and he said that that for a long time, the people running the agency's information technology had no expertise.

A 7-year-old boy died Thursday apparently from an accidental shooting in his Adelanto home, sheriff's officials said.
Authorities received a 911 call from a family member at 4:54 p.m. reporting an accidental shooting in the home, on the 18000 block of Bellflower Street.
An ambulance and sheriff's deputy arrived and tried to save the boy, identified as Daniel Cervantes. Daniel was taken to Victor Valley Global Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 6 p.m.
The family is cooperating with investigators, officials said.

A woman is dead and four others injured, including two young children, in a three-car crash in Irvine Wednesday night. Irvine police were searching for the driver of a black Mustang who fled the scene.
The crash was reported at about 9 p.m. at Alton and Barranca Parkway.
A white Chevy SUV involved in the crash carried four passengers: one woman was killed, another woman was in critical condition and two children, ages 3 and 6, were in full arrest when they were extricated from the vehicle.

An Orange County attorney convicted this year of killing a bicyclist while driving under the influence of prescription drugs has been accused of having a controlled substance while in jail, authorities said Tuesday.
Hasti Fakhrai-Bayrooti, 41, faces a felony drug possession charge after jail officials found her with Clonazepam, usually prescribed to treat anxiety, seizures and panic attacks, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.
Her attorney, William Weinberg, declined to comment on the new accusation.

A 19-year-old man was arrested Monday on suspicion of killing a 21-year-old man in an El Segundo home.
Kevin Carlson was found with a gunshot wound in his upper torso about 3 p.m. inside the bedroom of his apartment in the 1700 block of East Sycamore Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office and Sheriff's Department.
Carlson was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man has been arrested in the stabbing death of a AAA contractor in Pico Rivera, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
Tobias Ruben Cabrera, 39, was arrested Friday on suspicion of murder, according to a statement from the department.
The victim, Raymond Anthony Zabala III, was stabbed in the neck Tuesday in the 8400 block of Buhman Avenue as he was offering AAA assistance to a woman at her Pico Rivera home.

An ex-Los Angeles police officer accused of shooting a man outside a Pomona bar has been brought back to California from Texas to face a murder charge, officials confirmed Thursday.
Henry Solis, 27, was booked in the Pomona city jail Thursday afternoon after the extradition went “without any issues,” Pomona police Deputy Chief Michael Olivieri wrote on Twitter. Solis was moved from El Paso, Texas, where he had been held for a little over a week.
Lt. Hector Rodriguez said Solis would be turned over to the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on Friday morning. Solis could be arraigned as early as that day, Rodriguez said.

Six Marines who died in a helicopter crash in Nepal were remembered Wednesday for performing heroic acts to help the earthquake-stricken country.
"Our Marines gave their lives so that others might live," Lt. Col. Edward Powers, commander of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469, told attendees at a memorial service on the flight line at Camp Pendleton.
"Their last acts were heroic, selfless acts for fellow human beings who desperately needed their help," Powers said. "Our Marines executed their mission in the most noble of fashions."

A 24-year-old UCLA graduate student from China has been arrested on suspicion of groping several women at the university’s Westwood campus, authorities said Tuesday.
Pengcheng Bao, a doctoral candidate in chemistry and biochemistry, is accused of grabbing three female students on their upper thighs as he walked past them on the sidewalk, according to a statement issued by UCLA and a crime alert by university police.
The students had reported groping incidents allegedly involving Bao earlier this year, according to the university’s statement. One of the students snapped a photo of Bao with her phone, and the photo was included in a flyer distributed to the university community warning of the alleged battery.

A pickup truck and another sports utility vehicle collided with a Metro bus Monday evening in Burbank, injuring four people, authorities said.
About 10 p.m., a Metro bus traveling southwest on Hollywood Way near Alameda Avenue was struck by the two vehicles, Burbank fire Capt. Peter Hendrickson said.
Of the 11 passengers on board the bus, two were transported to the hospital along with the bus driver, Hendrickson said. The driver of one of the vehicles involved in the crash was also hospitalized.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Elfriede Rinkel's past as a Nazi concentration camp guard didn't keep her from collecting nearly $120,000 in American Social Security benefits.
Rinkel admitted to being stationed at the Ravensbrueck camp during World War II, where she worked with an attack dog trained by the SS, according to U.S. Justice Department records. She immigrated to California and married a German-born Jew whose parents had been killed in the Holocaust.

A man visiting his brother in Los Angeles County Jail, they said, fought with them in a waiting area and had to be restrained. The five deputies involved in the struggle adamantly denied the man's allegations that he had been handcuffed and then beaten.
Their account remained unchanged under scrutiny from internal sheriff's investigators, the district attorney's office and the man's defense lawyers. No one wavered even when federal authorities obtained an indictment accusing them of assault and civil rights violations.
